What is the FLS test
The Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) exam is a two-part, proctored exam that assesses cognitive and technical skills for performing laparoscopic surgery. The FLS exam consists of:
- Cognitive component: A timed multiple-choice exam that tests understanding and application of basic laparoscopy fundamentals. The exam emphasizes clinical judgment or intra-operative decision-making.
- Manual skills component: Five non-procedure specific simulation exercises that evaluate skills based on the efficiency (speed) and precision (accuracy) of the surgeons’ maneuvers.
The FLS program content has been endorsed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and is a joint educational offering of SAGES and ACS. The FLS exam is required for recognition by the American Board of Surgery.
Over 32,000 surgeons have taken the FLS test across the world.
